Bibliography

Prior to 1994 historians did not address the story of Oskar Schindler in any comprehensive manner. Short articles appeared in the press abroad with the recollections of the Schindler Jews or provided brief information on individual aspects of historical themes. In the 1960s the West European press, particularly journalists, wrote about Schindler in connection with the awards he was given; nevertheless, there was no impulse for more wide-reaching specialized and critical work. Behind the Iron Curtain of the Socialist bloc Schindler was hunted in the same way as Nazi criminals and the first impetus for discussion came with Věra Oliveriusová's article in the magazine World Literature, two years following the publication of Keneally’s novel. The argument over whether the camp in Brněnec was real or feigned subsided and the debate was sterilized into an immutable form of slanted history. At least in Socialist Czechoslovakia the terms Nazi and Sudeten German were synonymous with criminal. The fall of totalitarianism opened possibilities for new reflections on Central European history. In 1993 Schindler’s story as seen by Keneally and recast by Steven Spielberg rolled before the eyes of awestruck viewers. The as yet uncritically and emotionally viewed material raised the level of public interest in Schindler and the Holocaust. Today bookstore shelves are filled with numerous memoirs, biographies, and studies on this subject. It would seem that with the publication of American historian David M. Crowe’s book, appraised as the most comprehensive work on Schindler, the potential of the subject was exhausted. However, the opposite is true. The following is a select bibliography of the Schindler subject:
